Addendem to last post

After talking to the Human Resource Education academic advisor, I will be able to wait until April to start class. I have already completed the first class that the cohort starts in and there isn't a great alternative for me. I could take one of the last classes required but he suggested that it might be rather difficult without having other classes prior to taking it.

Additionally, because of a 10 week class rotation, this class beginning in April is still counted as a spring class. That keeps the University computer system happy because I'm enrolled according ot the records.

YEAH! I can actually get started back at work and get my feet under me there before I add class to my responsibilities. Oh yeah, it also looks like I'll have the summer off this year too.

This means I will probably finish in December 2008, rather than earlier but in my opinion, it makes this year a bit more manageable.

Persistence pays

Last spring I started working on a few classes for my master’s degree. I wasn’t yet in a program because the program I was interested in only accepts once per year and I had missed that deadline in October 2005. I planned to apply in October 2006 but would already have a few classes completed. As I started to prepare my application, I learned that the online Human Resource Education program would no longer be accepting employee tuition waivers. This decision wasn’t final but with each phone call (I pleaded with numerous people) I was finding less hope.

I find the employee tuition waivers one of the great perks of working for a University and without it, I was not interested in the program. We simply can’t afford tuition for two, especially when one class would cost nearly $2000. I could have enrolled in the on-campus program but that didn’t appeal to me the same way because of my schedule and the ease of going to class in my own home.

Because the department was still waffling with their decision, I decided to complete my application. The same week I turned in my application I learned that they had indeed decided to not accept the waivers. My acceptance letter came the week of Thanksgiving and I called last Monday to inform them that I likely would not be attending but needed more information on how to remain considered for the on-campus program if that was what I wanted to do. I was also looking at programs at other state universities, where my tuition waiver is good. When I called, the woman in the departmental office told me that she thought they would be accepting tuition waivers after all but someone would call to confirm this with me. WOULD SOMEONE MAKE A DECISION?! It was a good thing I filled out all my application materials because now I’m accepted and they will take my waiver. Otherwise, I would have had to wait another year and I can only take a limited number of classes before being in an actual program.

Now, I hope I’m not crazy for taking class 2 months after having a baby! Maybe I’ll just have to hire a cleaning lady but that’s for another entry.

Shift

I've made a definitely shift lately, in priorities that is. Although I have wanted to blog, there are only so many things I manage to get accomplished in a day and this has not been one of them. Additionally, our computer coupled with blogger were acting strange so this was delayed even more.

However, you will notice that I have managed to update the baby's blog. Like I said, there has been a shift in priorities. Being a mom is great but it can also be overwhelming at times. I'm used to getting so much done in a day and that has been geared back. Now, I'm making a daily list and trying to get through a few tasks, rather than everything I would like to accomplish for the whole week.

I'm also learning the value of me time and therefore will try to blog a bit more often. On Sunday, I went shopping for a few hours while my hubby stayed with Jeremiah. It was nice to run in to places quickly. What I did in 2 hours may have taken 3 with Jeremiah. Besides, I think it is important for them to spend time alone because I get that time everyday.

Hopefully it won't be a month before I post. Actually, I know it won't because I have a posting ready to go that I wrote earlier last week when the computer was acting up. Now I just have to update a few things and post it.
