Pantry Personality

As I was topping off last night's dinner recipe with a packet of dry onion soup mix, I started thinking about the staples that I keep in my pantry, how some of them were ingrained in my habits by the way I grew up and others are our own discoveries and tendencies in cooking. I also began contemplating what these staples say about our life. So, here are a few that have come to the top of my mind.

  • As I mentioned, dry onion soup mix and diced tomatoes. I make sure these are on hand at all times. There are so many recipes that require one or both. Maybe someday I'll make the time to can tomatoes. Oh, for the time to partake in food preservation!
  • Bisquick - this is one from childhood and it's for much more than breakfast. Those who know me well, know it is ALWAYS in supply.
  • EVOO - As Rachel Ray would say. This supports our quesadilla habit and so much more. Although our latest adventure in to coconut oil may replace this.
  • Cream of "fill in the blank" soup - add some noodles, meat and a veggie and you've got the quintessential casserole

What's in your pantry? There should be one of those web quizzes about what our pantries say about our personalities.

  • Hmmm, for dry goods I have pasta and red sauce, cream of mushroom and cream of celery soup (the "lite" version of both), tomato soup, progresso chicken noodle, chicken stock (usually in a carton), and a variety of canned fruit (mandarin oranges, pineapple and sometimes pears or peaches, esp. for winter months). Often we have vegetarian baked beans on hand (same taste, no fat!), as well as other beans (green, kidney, black), etc. We usually have a selection of rices (dirty rice, rice pilaf, couscous).

In the freezer I always have extra bread, lean ground beef, chicken breasts, and sometimes some special cuts like a pork tenderloin or filet mignon! We put meat in big packages and portion it into smaller amounts to freeze. We also tend to buy big bags of frozen green beans and mixed veggies as Sam's club and then portion them out as we need them...as well as big bags of shredded cheese.

In the spice department, can't live without chili powder, various Italian herbs, rosemary (i love rosemary!), sea salt and pepper. We have a variety of oils (sesame, olive and canola) and vinegars (red wine, balsamic, rice, cider and white).

My "throw it together" meal is usually some veggies, a meat (often grilled), and some rice. In winter months it's usually some beef, some beans...it turns into a hearty pot of chili with cornbread.

Probably way more than you wanted to know about my cupboards. :) Oh, I did overlook an important detail: I usually have some brownie mix on hand in case I need to throw together a quick dessert!!! Oh yeah, and J can't live without his favorite two condiments: FF sour cream and brown mustard...always have to have those on hand!
